TsAGI Demonstration Center Opens Sergey Chaplygin’s 155th Anniversary Expo

19 April 2024

Personal belongings, unique documents, research papers and artistic exhibits—this is not an exhaustive list of showpieces at Sergey Chaplygin’s 155th Anniversary Expo, opened at TsAGI (a part of NRC “Zhukovsky Institute”) Demonstration Center.

The opening ceremony was attended by Kirill Sypalo, Director General at TsAGI and Corresponding Member of the RAS. ‘Sergey Chaplygin dedicated all his life to science and TsAGI where his guidance shaped a new vector of mechanic research, and created a community of general theorists who would later become world-famous. So far, this scientific heritage has inspired scientists because knowing the origins helps moving in the right direction. And this is why it is vital for us to keep today the memory of our great predecessors in science. The priceless historical evidence presented at the expo helps us do it,’ he said.

D. Sc. Gennady Amiryants, Chief Researcher at TsAGI, gave a historical report on Sergey Chaplygin, presenting the scientist’s interesting biographical facts and his role in aviation development, and highlighting the contribution to founding TsAGI, in particular, the school of science and experimental base.

Ekaterina Grunina, Head for Corporate Culture at TsAGI, gave a guided tour around the expo. ‘Artifacts associated with a famous person—in this case, a scientist and a founder of TsAGI—make us immerse in the past and, therefore, arouse our keen interest. Our expo is remarked with Moscow University lecturer’s tailcoat with coat-of-arms buttons—professors and academicians used to wear such tailcoats in the early 20th century. The expo has also remarkable archival documents, such as evacuation certificate given at TsAGI to the family of Chaplygin. The expo is decorated by his pastel portrait by the famous graphic artist Olga Della-Vos-Kardovskaya,’ said Ekaterina Grunina.

The Demonstration Center displays authentic items from Sergey Chaplygin Moscow Memorial Apartment located on the street named after him—he lived there from 1920 to 1941 before being evacuated to Novosibirsk after the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War.

The expo will run until May 31, 2024.

TsAGI Demonstration Center is located at 1 Zhukovsky Street, Zhukovsky town. Opening hours: from Monday to Saturday from 10.00 to 19.00, break time: from 14.30 to 15.30. To get any information or to book a trip, please call +7 (903) 141-60-85; e-mail: demo@tsagi.ru.
