MAKS-2021: TsAGI Holds Seminar on Aircraft Structural Strength

The future supersonic transport (SST) must be lightweight, operationally reliable and comfortable for passengers. The challenges of creating scientific basis aimed at increasing an SST’s operational life were discussed at the 12th R&T seminar titled ‘Advanced structures of civil aircraft. WCRC “Supersonic”: Innovative technologies for creating a new-generation SST’. Held at TsAGITech, the seminar was a part of scientific-and-business program by TsAGI (a part of NRC “Zhukovsky Institute”) at MAKS-2021 Aviation and Space Salon.

The seminar was organized within activities by Laboratory for strength and smart structures, a subdivision of the WCRC ‘Supersonic’; TsAGI’s specialists for strength significantly contribute to work of the Laboratory. The WCRC included over 70 representatives from top Russian industrial, research and educational organizations occupied in aviation industry, such as: NRC “Zhukovsky Institute”, UAC, Central Research Institute for Special Machinery, PFRC UB RAS, Kazan Scientific Center of the RAS, Institute of Applied Mechanics of the RAS, KNRTU-KAI, SibNIA named after S.A. Chaplygin, MIPT, etc.

This year’s meeting focused on forming technological advance in research of structural characteristics of high-speed civil aircraft. The event was opened by Mikhail Zichenkov, Deputy Director General, Head of Strength Complex (TsAGI). His opening remarks addressed the importance of new approaches to organizing research in advanced-material structures. ‘Importantly, we should provide technological advance with the state-of-the-art tools and methods for design, development and operation of supersonic aviation technologies,’ said M. Zichenkov.

The participants delivered many interesting and scientifically-important reports on advanced structures, methods for designing them and for analyzing their strength. The reports were made both by TsAGI scientists and invited specialists: V. Matveenko, Scientific Supervisor (PFRC UB RAS), Academician of the RAS; V. Vasiliev, Deputy Chief Engineer (Central Research Institute for Special Machinery), Academician of the RAS; S. Sapozhnikov, Doctor of Technical Sciences; and representatives of Kazan Scientific Center of the RAS—KAI, Mechanical Engineering Research Institute of the RAS, etc.

An important report was delivered by Aleksandr Shanygin, Head of Laboratory for Advanced Aircraft Structure Strength (TsAGI), on usage of bionic structural design for SST structures, to solve critical problems of strength. The scientist presented preliminary assessment results of bionic structural design efficiency for advanced SST. The design is based on unidirectional composite structures forming a rigid rib frame, and on auxiliary elements based on a system of elastic skins, shockproof layers, special joints, etc.

Evgeny Dubovikov, Sub-Division Head for Static and Thermal Strength (TsAGI), reported on strength study of irregularly-structured frames for lattice fuselage sections. Unlike traditional airframes, these ones can potentially increase reliability and comfort, simultaneously improving weight efficiency of the airframe structure.

Other TsAGI specialists reported on developing parametric optimization method for mechanic metamaterial units (S. Belikov, I. Kondakov); on researching protective properties of aircraft structures when they are hit by a non-localized engine debris (A. Chernov, A. Shanygin); on forming a rational concept of advanced SST (V. Buzuluk, D. Gilyazev, B. Gurevich, A. Kazhan, V. Kazhan, S. Kuzin); on using fiber-optic sensors for stress-strain state measurement of aircraft structures (M. Bogatyryov, V. Petronevich); on calculating indirect path of sound transmission through aircraft lattice structure (A. Golubev, V. Kopyev); etc.

During the seminar, the Russian scientists also raised such topics as: fracture mechanics of orthotropic cracked composites; technology of hybrid cellular-lattice structures; analysis of panel flutter of reinforced shallow shells, usage of laser impact forging for longer fatigue life of metallic materials, etc. At the end of the meeting, the participants discussed the raised issues.

TsAGI’s International Research and Technology Conference was initiated in 2009, so that top domestic and foreign participants of joint projects could discuss the urgent challenges related to applied strength. Since then, the scientific conference has been organized regularly during MAKS Aviation Salon.
