100 Years Ago TsAGI Named After N. Zhukovsky—Address by CEO Kirill Sypalo

23 March 2021

On March 21, 2021 we celebrate 100-year anniversary as the Central Aero-Hydrodynamic Institute was named after N.E Zhukovsky, Russian great scientist.

This name, which is inscribed in golden letters in the history of aeronautics worldwide and familiar to everyone who is enthusiastic about the dream of flight, largely determined the fate of the formation and development of domestic aviation science.

An inquisitive researcher, author of many works in theoretical mechanics, he was one of the first to move from abstract problems to the practical needs of technology, giving us a universal methodology of scientific investigation that is still applicable today.

A talented administrator, to whom the aerodynamic laboratory of the Moscow Higher Technical School, the Air Force Academy and, of course, our TsAGI owe their appearance, at all stages of his activity Zhukovsky strove to create an environment conducive to the embodiment of ideas and solutions in real designs..

A teacher and a mentor, he cultivated the enthusiasm and the responsibility for ‘the real thing’ in his associates, involving them into the center of research and engineering.

In all the affairs, in every project and undertaking of Nikolai Yegorovich, the main feature of his character was clearly manifested — the study aimed at creation.

Having laid the foundation for key sections of aviation science, having encouraged his students by personal example to further transfer knowledge and skills by creating their own schools and currents, having supported fundamental research with experiment, Zhukovsky encapsulated all his experience and wisdom at the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute

My dear colleagues, with all my heart I congratulate you on this momentous event! I am sure that the name of Nikolay Yegorovich Zhukovsky, which our Institute was proudly named after, will continue to inspire its employees for new achievements for the benefit of science.
