WCRC “Supersonic” reports on the work results of its Laboratories in 2020

The online meeting of the Scientific Board of the World-Class Research Center “Supersonic” (WCRC “Supersonic”) was held on January 28 at the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute named after Professor N.E Zhukovsky (part of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute”). The main topic of the agenda was the outputs of the work of the WCRC laboratories in 2020.

Kirill Sypalo Director General of FSUE TsAGI, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, opened the meeting and recalled the goals and scientific tasks of the WCRC “Supersonic”.

Sergei Chernyshev, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chief Scientific Officer of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise TsAGI, made a report on the activities of Laboratory 1 “Aerodynamics and concept design of low sonic boom and low-noise supersonic transport aircraft (SST)”. The scientist reported that in 2020 the laboratory’s research yielded in two main areas: the development of methods for aerodynamic analysis and SST design, as well as research in the field of sonic boom (calculation methods, propagation, areas of influence). For the SST test configuration, the main technical requirements were formulated in terms of cruising speed, flight envelop, length of a balanced runway and safe approach speed.

Viktor Kopyev, Head of Laboratory 2 “Aeroacoustics and Vibrations”, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences presented the outcomes, including a review of existing turbulence models, their adaptation to the theories of noise generation, consideration of methods for calculating jet noise for a low bypass engine, study of mathematical models and numerical methods of increased accuracy for solving problems of aeroacoustics, as well as the results of studying the effect of incident acoustic radiation on the response of deformable structural elements.

The outcomes of Laboratory 3 “Strength and Intelligent Structures” were announced by its head, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Valery Matveenko. Over the past year, its specialists formulated requirements for promising pro-bionic structural-power schemes, selected smart materials for controlling geometry and dynamic processes, etc.

Head of laboratory 4 “Gas dynamics and power plant”, Doctor of Technical Science Alexander Lanshin in his report focused on the outcomes in the field of modeling the impact of harmful emissions in the airport area.

The works of the fifth laboratory “Artificial Intelligence and Flight Safety” were presented in the report of its head, Doctor of Technical Sciences Alexander Efremov. In particular, patent research and a review of the literature on promising integrated control systems were carried out, the main factors influencing the justification of the criteria for the response to commands and the choice of levers were identified, key problems and features of the SST as an object of control were identified, etc..

The members of the Scientific Board approved the presented results of the work of the laboratories of the WCRC “Supersonic”.

The composition of the WCRC Scientific Board was approved at the general meeting of participants on December 24, 2020. It includes leading scientists in the field of aircraft engineering — representatives of the Russian members of the WCRC “Supersonic” and foreign experts, including Bernd Liebhardt from DLR (Germany), Gérald Carrier from Onera (France), Stephane Lemaire from Dassault Aviation (France), Sergey Karabasov from Queen Mary University of London (Great Britain), and Nicole Viola from Politecnico de Torino (Italy). Victor Kopiev, Head of the aeroacoustics department of TsAGI and Head of Laboratory 2 of the WCRC “Supersonic” was elected Chair of the Scientific Board.

TsAGI is the initiator of the WCRC “Supersonic” and the coordinator of the consortium. The project is being implemented from 2020 to 2025. The planned results of the Center’s activities are innovative futuristic configurations of low noise and low sonic-boom SST, multi-criteria aircraft design technology, an information display system based on technical vision and AR (augmented reality technology) in the cockpit, etc.
