Representatives of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute” and TsAGI participate in Aerodays 2019-2020

17 June 2019

Delegation of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute” participated in Aerodays 2019-2020, the 8-th European Conference on aviation. The event took place in Bucharest (Romania).

The Deputy Director General for the coordination of international cooperation and interaction with international organizations of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute”, Chief Scientific Officer of the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute, Academician of the Russian Academy of Science Sergey Chernyshev delivered a report at the plenary “Development of international cooperation.” The report “Towards Next Generation Supersonic Transport” was dedicated to the world prospects of the supersonic aircraft development, the analysis of existing challenges, as well as completed and current research in this field.

In addition, the business program “Aerodays 2019-2020” included three reports by TsAGI specialists on the Institute’s participation in the EU Framework Programmes. For example, Deputy Chief of TsAGI’s Department of aerodynamics and aircraft missiles, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Vitaly Sudakov spoke about TsaGI’s experience in international projects on active flow control. These include AFLoNext (Active Flow Loads & Noise Control on Next-Generation Wing), INAFLOWT (Developing Technologies to Improve the Aerodynamic Performance of Next-Generation Passenger Liners) and BUTERFLI (Study of Buffeting and Laminar-Turbulent Transition).

The head of TsAGI’s Department of aeroacoustics, professor Victor Kopiev delivered a report devoted to TsAGI’s research in the framework of ARTEM project (Development of Active Noise Reduction Methods at Jet-Wing Interaction). In the framework of this project, the Institute runs an experimental study of the screening effect for different kinds of noise sources, as well as a concept study of instability waves to develop on its basis active noise reduction methods.

The Head of TsAGI’s laboratory of strength of prospective aircraft Alexander Shanygin told in his report about the Institute’s research in the field of composite lattice structures for composite airframes in a joint Russian-European projects ALaSCA (Advanced Lattice Structures for Composite Airframes of the New Generation of Civil Aircraft) and PoLaRBEAR (Production Aspects of Lattice Related Barrel Elements with Advanced Reliability). Their main outcome was the rationale for more than 10% of the weight saving of latticed composite fuselage barrels compared with metal or standard composite.

European Aeronautics Days “Aerodays” has been a milestone event in the field of aeronautical research and innovations in Europe for the last three decades. It has been regularly hold since 1991 and reflects the priorities and strategies of the EU Framework Programmes.

The 8th Conference “Aerodays 2019-2020” is devoted to the developments in aeronautics and air transport obtained during the 8th EU framework programme “Horizon 2020” — the largest research and innovation program to date.
