TsAGI continues studying light convertible aircraft

Specialists of the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI, a member of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute”) completed the regular testing phase of a light convertible aircraft model with modified empennage. The experiments were conducted in TsAGI’s low-speed wind tunnel.
Previously TsAGI experts developed a concept of a lightweight convertible aircraft (LCA) and tested several variants of model items (fuselage, tail, wing, etc.), including cryogenically powered. There was also conducted anti-icing research. In addition, there were received the characteristics of directional stability of the model at takeoff and landing, and at cruising flight without considering the airflow from the screws.
The last series of tests included research of the aircraft model with running propellers. The Institute’s scientists identified the propellers jets effect on the new horizontal stabilizer.
In addition, during experiments there was tested the leading-edge flap. This aircraft configuration is designed to improve the characteristics of longitudinal flying qualities and protect horizontal stabilizer from the premature flow separation phenomenon at take-off and landing modes.
The research results confirmed the expected change of the moment characteristics of the aircraft model. The new stabilizer installation allowed reducing the adverse effect of the propellers slipstreams on the directional stability at basic flight modes.
The further research of the light convertible aircraft will be focused on the further improving of its aerodynamic layout, specifically the wing-to-fuselage fairing optimization, fairing configurations and others airframe elements.
The light convertible aircraft will be utilized both for passenger and for freight without changing the design. The aircraft is designed to transport 50 passengers over a distance of 1500 km or 6 tons of cargo at a distance of 1000 km. Its cruising speed will reach 480 km/h.
