TsAGI holds XXX Scientific and Technical Conference in Aerodynamics

13 May 2019

The XXX anniversary Scientific and Technical Conference in Aerodynamics took place in Volodarsky village in the Moscow region in April 25-29, 2019. The event was dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of S.A.Chaplygin — one of the founders of modern aerodynamics and the second Director of TsAGI. The Department of aerodynamics and aircraft missiles of the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI, a member of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute”) hosted the Conference with the support of the Russian Foundation of Fundamental Research.

“30 years is a long period, and we can confidently say that the Conference has been a success,” underlined in his welcoming speech Alexander Medvedsky, TsAGI’s First Deputy Director General. “The forum allows combining fundamental, applied science and industry. I hope that the young people, who are here today, will continue our proud tradition.”

A plenary session traditionally opened the Conference. TsAGI, Sukhoi Civil Aircraft, PJSC Tupolev delivered their reports at the plenary meeting. The head of TsAGI’s Department of aerodynamics and aircraft missiles Andrey Volkov spoke about results of the research in aircraft aerodynamics, carried out by the Department in 2018. In their turn, scientists of Sukhoi Civil Aircraft presented their opinion in solving new aerodynamics tasks to improve the competitiveness of domestic transport aircraft. Representatives of JSC Tupolev told about interesting aspects of aerodynamics of the Soviet supersonic passenger aircraft Tu-144 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its first flight. Finally, Victor Kopyev, head of the Aeroacoustics and Aviation Ecology Division of TsAGI, Doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, Professor, covered the topic of the use of flight experiment in aeroacoustics.

The participants of the Conference delivered more than 200 reports in 12 sections on aircraft aerodynamics and power plant aerodynamics, computational and experimental aerodynamics, flight dynamics, aerodynamics of helicopters, flow control and other scientific areas. Following the tradition a separate section was devoted to the works of young professionals. “The active participation of young people is a big success of the Conference,” said leading researcher at TsAGI’s Department of aerodynamics and aircraft missiles Vladimir Fomin. “Students and young scientists from research institutes and design bureaus delivered many reports. It raises their profiles in sciences society. In addition, they have an opportunity to discuss their issues and put questions to any participant, whether an academician or the head of a company.”

In addition to TsAGI’s experts, the conference welcomed participants from P.I. Baranov Central Institute of Aviation Motor Development (CIAM), Sukhoi Civil Aircraft, JSC Tupolev, Irkut Corporation, RKK Energia, Institute for Problems in Mechanics named after A.Yu. Ishlinsky, Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics, the Computing Centre named after A.A. Dorodnitsyn, TSNIIMASH, JSC Sukhoi Company, NPO Mashinistroyenia and others as well as representatives of universities: MIPT, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Novosibirsk State Technical University, Saint Petersburg State University of Civil Aviation and others.
