TsAGI strengthens partnerships with Chinese research institutions

16 April 2019

In early April, the leadership of the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI, a member of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute”) visited a number of research organizations of the People’s Republic of China. The main lines of business were the implementation of joint projects, as well the discussion of promising directions of cooperation with key partners of the Institute. The delegation visited Chinese Aerodynamic Research Center (CARDC, the city of Mianyang). The parties signed a contract to conduct expert and project works on a continuous-operating large transonic wind tunnel, which CARDC is planning to construct. Within the framework of the contract, TsAGI will carry out examination and preliminary design study of certain structural elements of the wind tunnel. The parties also discussed the status of the ongoing collaborative research projects. In particular, one of the agenda’s issues was the holding of a bilateral symposium on fundamental and applied aerodynamics. Representatives of the Institute examined the Center’s experimental facility — wind tunnels with the speed range from subsonic to hypersonic, icing wind tunnel, new acoustic wind tunnel.

TsAGI leadership visited Beijing Aviation Science and Technology Research Institute (BASTRI, Beijing). The visit was devoted to the priority areas of cooperation between the two organizations. It includes the development of methods for design and analysis of a composite wing taking into consideration its aeroelasucity, the concept study of the advanced civil subsonic aircraft, etc. The heads of the Institutions confirmed mutual interest in the areas of activity and agreed on the next steps and timelines for the implementation of the projects.

In negotiations with the Chinese Aeronautical Establishment (SAE, Beijing) the parties discussed the question of scientific and technical conference TsAGI-SAE “Fundamental objectives of aerodynamics, dynamics, strength and flight safety”. The focus of mutual attention of TsAGI and China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics (CAAA, Beijing) is aerospace studies, numerical and experimental aerodynamics and measuring systems. At the meeting the leaders signed Cooperative organizations agreement on scientific and technological cooperation between TsAGI and CAAA.

“Such a fruitful visit is the proof of a constructive dialogue with both traditional partners and new contacts from China,” said TsAGI Director General, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Science Kirill Sypalo. “The development of such an interaction with foreign colleagues has a positive impact on the scientific-research potential and a beneficial impact on the economic climate of the both countries.”
