TsAGI’s technologies to improve flight safety

Approximately 30 per cent of aviation accidents all over the world are associated with the heavy landing and runway excursion, when an aircraft veers off or overruns the runway surface during either take-off or landing. It can result in loss of life, damage of aircraft and ground infrastructure, disrupt the airport performance. Specialists of the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI, a member of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute”) are working on promising technologies to improve flight safety and reduce the risk of such incidents.

TsAGI has been involved in the research of runway excursion since 2015 within the framework of the Solutions for Runway Excursions project of the Future Sky Safety international program. Close cooperation with airlines and the support form Rosaviatsya helped to form operational flight data. It is aimed at testing various methods of analytical procedure to study the influence of external factors on flight safety (side wind, slippery runway, etc.), and identify high-risk situations at landing. The results of the research formed the basis for the evolving concept of promising crew situational awareness system. For its functionality testing TsAGI currently uses a mini test stand, based on a general-purpose calculator with controllers, which simulates aircraft landing at various conditions, testes system’s behavior and the options for the crew informing (on the display, by audio).

“This system, relying on actual flight parameters — weather and runway condition, continuously evaluates the situation,” said the Chief of TsAGI’s Department of Aviation Safety Complex Vladimir Strelkov. “It counts up variations, generates informational messages and recommendations to the crew about the aircraft control. We have managed to catch the interest in this development of the representatives of Russian aviation industry. In close collaboration with industry the first domestic prototype of such a system could appear on an experimental plane in a few years.”
