TsAGI experts investigate icing together with European colleagues

In Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute named after Prof. N.E. Zhukovsky (part of Zhukovsky Institute National Research Centre) the considerable attention is paid to icing effect made on aerodynamics, stability and controllability of aircraft. Specialists of the Institute intend to carry out some investigations in cooperation with the European Union in the framework of ICE-GENESIS Project to study ice accretion on aircraft surfaces in conditions of supercooled drops and snow.
In early April, TsAGI hosted a working meeting with their project partners — AIRBUS HELICOPTERS Company (AIH), France. During the visit the Russian and international scientists discussed research topics of common interest in the field of icing and areas of further cooperation. Also, they visited the helicopter blade test rig, the Climatic-type Icing Wind Tunnel, and the all-season rig of artificial icing.
‘Among fields of common interest in our cooperation with AIRBUS we can mention the investigations regarding the effect of supercooled drops and snow on aircraft in the framework of ICE GENESIS Project, the future design of test rig and full-scale tests of helicopter blades in icing conditions, and research on anti-icing coatings and systems,’ — said candidate of physical and mathematical science Alexey Miller, head of division in the Aerothermal Dynamics of Hypersonic Flying Vehicles and Space-Rocket Machinery Department of TsAGI.
ICE-GENESIS (Creating the next generation of 3D simulation means for icing) project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 824310. In this project, TsAGI together with AIRBUS HELICOPTER Company and other partners develops experimental methods and numerical codes to investigate icing in severe weather conditions. The project began in January 2019 and it will take four years.
