Flight safety is the focus area for the leading center of aeronautical science

Flight dynamics and flight control have always been one of the major directions of scientific research for the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI, a member of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute”). The Institute’s specialists make analysis of aircraft stability and control, control algorithm synthesis, etc.

“Flight safety is one of the primary challenges facing developers, manufacturers and operators of the civil aviation aircraft,” explains Yury Shelyukhin, Chief Researcher at the Department of Dynamics and Aircraft Control Systems. “A high level of automation for the passenger aircraft control at foreign (Airbus and Boeing) as well as domestic companies (Sukhoi Civil Aircrafts, Tupolev, Irkut Corporation) allows to significantly increasing the flight safety. On the other hand, a high level of automation reduces the pilot’s active participation in the aircraft control. It reduces the pilot’s readiness to takeover the aircraft control if necessary. Therefore the main problem of the introduction of automation high-level aircraft control is to ensure the reliability and safety of the automatic devices. It can be achieved by the element redundancy and the multistage hardware and software testing. A very important step is to complete the development of algorithms and software of all elements of the management system at simulators and in flight tests. TsAGI originally, from the 1990s, with the advent of the first automated flight monitoring systems at the Tu-204, pays close attention to the development of high-performance control algorithms, structural reliability of digital remote control systems and means to ensure flight safety. The Institute is involved in all stages of the development and refining of these systems for domestic planes. Much attention is paid to the human interface for the best flight characteristics, rational allocation of function between crew and automation facilities and to avoid their confrontation, and enhance flight safety by reducing the human-factor aspect. As a result, all the Russian passenger aircraft (the Tu-204, Tu-134, SSJ100, MC-21, etc.) are equipped with highly reliable high-performance digital flight monitoring systems.”
