TsAGI aerodynamicists test IL-276 at takeoff and landing modes with the deflection of wing device

25 December 2017

Specialists of the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI, a member of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute”) completed another testing phase of a medium-lift military transport model of the IL-276. The work was carried out in the TsAGI subsonic wind tunnel within the contract with PJSC “IL.”

The aim of the research was to determine the aerodynamic characteristics (ADC) of the aircraft model with mechanized wing at takeoff and landing modes.

An important moment of the study was the influence of the Earth’s surface proximity, which was simulated by the Flight Strip Screen, for the takeoff and landing characteristics of the aircraft. While approaching the ground, the aircraft with the high-lift device extended may reduce the lift characteristics at high angles of attack and change directional stability. The research demonstrated little impact of the Earth’s surface proximity for the ADC on the aircraft model.

Following the results of the two test phases at subsonic and transonic wind tunnels, TsAGI scientists obtained volumes of information about aerodynamic characteristics of the aircraft model at take-off and landing. A detailed data analysis will identify the ways to improve the layout of the aircraft.

The Ilyushin Il-276 is a project of a two-engine, medium-lift military transport aircraft with a payload up to 20 tons at a range of 2 000 km at speeds of 750-800 km/h.

It can be operated at high-elevation aerodromes and on artificial runaways and dirt air strips, at any geographical and climatic conditions, at any time of the day, in adverse weather conditions.
