TsAGI scientists learn about the methodology of semi-natural flight simulation

5 December 2017

During November 2017, specialists of the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI, a member of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute”) participated in the seminar “Flight dynamics and aircraft management.” The key topic of the discussion was the methodology of semi-natural experiments with flight simulator.

Questions answered were: Why is it so important to develop the flight dynamics as experimental science? What are the problems of semi-natural simulation? Why do we need to create new and improve existing flight simulations? Sergey Bazhenov, the Head of the Flight Dynamics and Control Systems Department of TsAGI answered these and other questions in his report. In greater detail the scientist brought attention to the technology of controlling systems, assessment of the characteristics of stability and controllability. He touched upon the problem of improving the man-machine interface (controls and displays), evaluation of the combat effectiveness of aircraft using super-maneuverability modes, etc.

TsAGI experts Larisa Zaychik and Yuri Yashin reviewed in their joint report the influence of large overloads on pilots. They explained how to improve the overload capacity of the fighter pilot and, as a consequence, his performance capabilities to achieve high-performance maneuvering. Young TsAGI specialist Sergey Kovtun reported the algorithms of the aircraft control while landing the ship.

The current seminar was the second one and was organized within the framework of the 5th International Scientific and Practical Conference “Zhukovsky Academic readings” in Voronezh. It was organized by TsAGI, MAI and the Military Air Force Academy of Professor N.E. Zhukovsky and Yuri Gagarin. The first event was held in TsAGI in spring 2017 and was focused on the computer models of pilots. It is expected that the seminar will become a regular feature. For example, in the autumn of 2018 it will be held at the Institute and will be timed to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the leading centre of aeronautical science, TsAGI.
