Representatives of All-Russian public television “T-24” VGTRK asked the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI, a member of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute”) to assist in the production of a popular science documentary film devoted to model making.
The shooting took place in November at TsAGI’s research and production complex in Zhukovsky. Institute engineers showed the technologies that they use when creating aerodynamic models made of composite materials. They demonstrated the vacuum infusion method of manufacturing, a promising technology that is used in the production of composites. The film crew was also shown a universal dynamic-scale model of a civil aircraft designed by specialists of TsAGI. A number of design and technological solutions to manufacturing such objects comes from sports modeling. Many high-level employees of Russia’s leading centre of aeronautical science are engaged in advanced aeromodelling, a profile sport for TsAGI and essential to its philosophy. TsAGI members have repeatedly became prize-winners of both World Championships and of Russian aircraft modeling.
The documentary’s premier will take place in December. The storyline features various examples of modeling and explains why this sport now is experiencing a new wave of popularity in Russia. The film’s main characters are people engaged in model creation for many of whom aeromodeling has become their life’s work.
