21 July 2017

On 21 July the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute leadership (TsAGI, a member of the National Research Center" Institute named after N.E.Zhukovsky“) took part in the opening ceremony of the memorial to the honored test pilot of the USSR, the test astronaut Rimantas Antanas Stankyavichus. The event was a part of MAKS-2017 in Zhukovsky.

The idea to memorialize R. A. Stankyavichus is a joint initiative of the city administration, TSAGI and the Flight Research Institute named after M. M. Gromov — the place where he worked. The Extraodinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Lethuanian Republic to the Russian Federation Remilius Motuzas took part in the event, as well as well-known pilots, representatives of State bodies, aviation enterprises and universities.

“Today we have opened a memorial to the outstanding test pilot Rimantas Stankyavichus,” TsAGI Director General Sergey Chernyshev noted in his speech. “He was one of those who through their talent and ability contributed to the development of the world’s aircraft industry and world aviation. He was outstanding among his equals.”

R. A. Stankyavichus conducted tests of the MiG-21, MiG-25, MiG-29, Su-27, participated in the “Buran” program and others. One of the streets in the central part of Zhukovsky where the event took place is named after Stankyavichus.
