International Cooperation

Issues of flight safety improvement, reduction of harmful emissions and acoustic impact of aircraft on the environment, as well as ensuring comfort and availability of air transport, require complex solutions that are possible only through extensive international cooperation among research organizations and aviation industry enterprises at all stages of aircraft development.

Over the years of work in the field of international cooperation, TsAGI has established strong business relations and continues to successfully cooperate with the leading foreign aerospace companies (Boeing, Airbus, Embraer, SAFRAN, Leonardo, Dassault Aviation, Thales, COMAC, etc.), research centres and organizations in Europe, Asia and America (ONERA, DLR, NLR, CAE, CARDC, NAL, DRDO, NASA, etc.), universities (Delft University of Technology, Cranfield University, De Montfort University, University of the Witwatersrand, etc.).

As part of its foreign economic activities, TsAGI has completed about 600 contracts and grant projects with foreign partners in the following areas:

— Experimental and computational research in the field of aerodynamics, flight dynamics, aircraft strength and aeroacoustics;

— Design and manufacture of experimental units, benches, aviation simulators;

— Expert examination of projects; and

— Development of specialized software.

TsAGI took part in 50 projects of the European Union Framework Programs, a powerful tool for global scientific and technological advancement. Extensive and long-term cooperation within these projects enables TsAGI to acquire valuable experience of cooperation with the Europe’s leading companies and research centres, build scientific and technical potential, and also demonstrates a competitive edge, as well as a high level of competence of TsAGI employees in the key issues of aerospace industry development.

TsAGI operates a Contact Point in Brussels (Belgium) as a part of its support for the National Contact Point “Aeronautics,” organized at TsAGI and powered by the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia and the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia. The mission of the new department at TsAGI is to increase the involvement of Russian organizations in European aerospace research programs with the aim of long-term development of international scientific and technological cooperation between Russia and the EU.

Representatives of TsAGI traditionally participate in the international aerospace shows such as the Paris Air Show (France), Farnborough (UK), ILA (Germany), Airshow China (China), Aero India (India), MAKS (Russia), Gidroaviasalon (Russia) and major scientific aerospace forums (ICAS, EUCASS, STAI, IFASD, CEAS, etc.).

With the support of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia, the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, the National Research Centre “Institute named after N. E. Zhukovsky,” RAS, UAC and the Union of Aviation Producers, TsAGI regularly organizes international scientific and technical events, which are highly reputable among scientific organizations and industrial enterprises, and are held both in Russia and abroad. The most significant projects include the ICAS 2014 International Congress, held in Russia for the first time, the 4th IFAR Summit, the traditional meeting of heads of the world’s leading research aviation centres, International Forum on Aeroelasticity and Structural Dynamics IFASD 2015.

Scientific seminars, such as TsAGI — ONERA and TsAGI — DLR, are held annually and play an important role in the long-term cooperation of major aviation centres. Sharing of research results and the common interest toward scientific experiments fosters the development of new ideas and implementation of advanced technologies. Every two years the Russian-Chinese Conference is held, being a part of the wider general plan for scientific and technological cooperation between Russian and Chinese enterprises, and involving implementation of joint promising projects.

Numerous joint research projects and works, high-level scientific and technical events, new cooperation areas and formats continuously affirm the authority of TsAGI and the leading role of Russian aviation science on a global scale.
